I was wondering what was going to be in that “Special” section on the official Birth by Sleep website. Turns out, North America will get special decals for the PSP for pre-ordering Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep at either; Gamestop, Best Buy, or Amazon, as per the usual fare.

I’m kind of excited to be honest. It may not seem like much but these will bring my PSP that much closer to actually being a Special Edition Birth by Sleep PSP because…

as you can see, they are of the same design :D

This really will be the next best thing to buying an actual $300-$400 one off of Ebay, which I have been tempted to do on occasion (AHAHAA WITH WHAT FUNDS?)

JASMINE – GOLD

1. PRIDE

2. sad to say

3. L.I.P.S.

4. Jealous

5. Bad Girl.

6. dear my friend

7. stage ~interlude~

8. This Is Not A Game

9. CLUBBIN’

10. Koi

11. what you want?

12. No more

13. Dreamin’

14. Why

That’s right, I’m reviewing GOLD. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to, but after a few more listens of certain tracks I finally decided to. This is JASMINE first album after a good amount of singles. On a related note, I wish she would have stayed with the same shot all of her singles have had; her, mid-thigh up for the most part, instead of that close up shot. But I get it, it’s an album they have to change it up, whatever, it’s all about the music anyway, right?

The album opens up with PRIDE which I guess at 2:28 serves as an intro? It starts with some heartbeats, and then this piano that sounds like something would hear in a Broadway play. I guess it serves as a good intro but I don’t have any strong feelings for it one way or the other.

Score – 6

“sad to say” was JASMINE’s first single, but it didn’t really grab me then. It really doesn’t do anything for me here either, but I wouldn’t say it’s a bad song. It’s got a pretty good beat, backed by some piano, but I just couldn’t really get into it.

Score – 6

I thought “L.I.P.S.” was pretty good, it’s fairly straightforward, synthy, and it’s pretty sexy. The chorus was the best part of the song although I really didn’t like the J.A.S.M.I.N.E. break down bridge thing and towards the end of the song.

Score – 7

I can say for sure, that Jealous was the sole reason I have stayed interested in JASMINE. When I first heard it I was like “oh this JASMINE girl again”. But my thoughts changed as soon as it started up. This song is damn catchy. I loved the mix of musical styles.

Score – 9

She switches it up here with “Bad Girl.” as it’s a bit of a rock track featuring strings, piano, and some grungy sounding electric guitar. I liked the darker tone that this song had and felt it was a good change of pace. I thought the lyrics were pretty good as well.

Score – 8

“dear my friend” starts out kind of interesting, and there’s this phone vibrating sound effect that’s played and I was actually looking for MY phone! xD It’s a slower paced song similar to Jealous, but I wouldn’t really compare the two. It’s an alright song but it wasn’t incredibly memorable.

Score – 7

stage ~interlude~ is kind of weird but brilliant at the same time, she goes from “jungle” to “city” to “world” to “stage” and it worked as a PERFECT transition into This Is Not A Game.

Score – 7

“This Is Not A Game” has that darker tone like Bad Girl that I liked a lot. The lead up to the chorus is really good and the haunting piano is really great, along with the darker synth, I thought it made the song, especially during the chorus which is probably the best part of the song.

Score – 8

“CLUBBIN’” picks up the rocker sound that has been heard and amplifies it a bit. Although musically, there isn’t that much more going on here. The vocals are a bit faster paced here though. I was actually kind of surprised that I didn’t like it more.

Score – 7

One of the only things I didn’t like about “Koi” was the repetition of the word “crazy” which was JUST done in CLUBBIN’. If it weren’t for that, I would have any strong feelings about it.

Score – 5

I definitely liked the funky sound of “what you want?” Again it was another good change of pace for the album. It’s slower paced and has a really great funk music sound even if it does seem a little repetitive.

Score – 7

“No More” definitely caught my eye (but it really was Jealous that got me fixated). It has a mid tempo, melancholic sound backed by some brass and piano. I liked the faster paces vocals leading up to the chorus. I thought that No More and This Is Not A Game sound sort of the same sometimes but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying them.

Score – 9

“Dreamin’” really sticks out as the albums only real ballad, but it’s a pretty good song. This is where JASMINE really proves she’s got the pipes (not that she hasn’t in previous songs). Of course the little English in it is a bit cheesy but hey, it’s a Japanese ballad! xD It’s fairly typical but decent enough.

Score – 7

The album closes with “Why” which has one of the strongest, solely R&B sounds of the album. I really liked the beats and the synth, it has some other interesting and more subtle sounds like a harpsichord tucked in there as well. I thought the sound of the song was a fairly good way to end the album. The highs she hits towards the end of the song are really impressive as well.

Score – 8

~OVERALL~

What I can say about this album, is that the single tracks were of course pretty strong, and memorable, but the newer album tracks, while decent (Bad Girl., what you want?, and Why being stand outs) weren’t ALL THAT great. I am interested to see where JASMINE goes from here though and I will be keeping an eye out for her.

FINAL SCORE

FullFullFullFullEmpty

*EDIT*

OK, I now realize that this album contains a total of 3 new tracks (excluding intro and interlude of course and yes I now know that what you want? is not a new track) which is pretty disappointing considering. I acknowledge this, however, since this is the first time I am hearing most of the songs on this album, that doesn’t affect my review. I will say, that even though some of them are good, L.I.P.S. and what you want? in particular, this album contains too many B-sides.

BoA – WOO WEEKEND

1. WOO WEEKEND

2. NO DANCE, NO LIFE

3. WOO WEEKEND (Instrumental)

4. NO DANCE, NO LIFE (Instrumental)

I am very happy to say that with this single, BoA is officially back. If you read my IDENTITY review, you know that I pretty much did not like it at all. I was skeptical about WOO WEEKEND because of it, but she has redeemed herself.

I think there is some sort of Disney tie-in for “WOO WEEKEND” but I don’t feel as if that effects the song itself in anyway, I know some people who were skeptical because of that for some reason. Regardless, WOO WEEKEND has a really great funky beat with an 80′s kind of style to the music. One of my biggest complaints about IDENTITY was BoA’s vocals, but here, they are great. The chorus was pretty catchy and I really liked it.

Score – 8

“NO DANCE, NO LIFE” continues to carry that distinct 80′s sound with it. I wouldn’t really compare to WOO WEEKEND though. It’s a much slower paced song, and feels a bit low key even. It wasn’t amazing, but fairly decent, good for a B-side I’d say.

Score – 6

~OVERALL~

What an improvement. Faith = Restored ^_^

New Scoring Format

07/17/2010 at 4:07 PM | Posted in Blog Posts | Leave a comment

I have revised the way I review singles and albums. I felt the current format did not leave enough room for my actual thoughts on individual songs and why a single or album received the score it did. You can check it all out here in the Review Key. The first review with the change will be BoA’s WOO WEEKEND. Hopefully, all goes well with the new format.

Ayumi Hamasaki – MOON / blossom

(This track listing is a culmination of all versions of the single)

1. MOON

2. blossom

3. Microphone (THE LOWBROWS remix)

4. Last Links (Orchestra Version)

5. Don’t look back (Reggae Disco Rockers Remix)

6. meaning of Love (Acoustic Piano Version)

7. MOON (Instrumental)

8. blossom (Instrumental)

YAY! Finally this single is released, I have been waiting for it for so long :P This single marks the start of a “3 Single Project” from Ayumi, which I am really excited about. It all leads up to her 50th single!

“MOON” is a really powerful rock-ish ballad. Coming off of Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus, it really reminded me of Last Links instantly, which was a good thing, Last Links was by far one of my most favorite album tracks.  I really liked the calming intro that is suddenly interrupted by blaring electric guitar as the rest of the instruments come in. The lyrics are really good and made the song just that much better for me. The chorus is great as well, feeling especially powerful by the way Ayumi sings it.

Score – 9

As soon as I heard blossom in it’s respective CM I was instantly in love with it and wanted to hear the whole thing. Just a small detail that I liked about blossom was the short and soft piano intro and outro. As much as I wish it sounded all around more happy, I kind of like the darker vibes I got from it. This is due to the electric guitar used throughout, especially during the bridge where it reminded me of the fairyland bridge. Even though I say that, I think it’s still a bit different from other “summer songs” Ayumi has put out in the past. Just a small detail that I liked about blossom was the short and soft piano intro and outro. The chorus is really infectious too, I was running about my house like “SOSHITE BOKURA WAAAA ARU KI HAJIMETAAAA” XD OK I think I’ve gone on about blossom long enough :P

Score – 8.5

So once again, even though it’s probably getting old, I will proclaim my hate for remixes. But this is another one of those exceptions ^o^ I can actually stand “THE LOWBROWS remix” of Microphone because it’s still maintains some semblance of a song. I didn’t love everything, like some of the “skipping” vocals, but it still has a  good beat and is fun to listen to. I thought that the new beat and melody went well with the vocals too.

Score – 7

One of my favorite tracks off Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus gets an epic upgrade. The “Orchestra Version” of Last Links is just stunning. It adds some of the most beautiful strings I’ve ever heard, some harp and a little percussion. The last chorus when everything comes together, brought a tear to my eye. I never wanted this to end.

Score – 9

Don’t look back was already a unique song for Ayu, and the “Reggae Disco Rockers Remix” makes it even more unique, giving it a completely new, Reggae sound. There’s some synth mixed in here as well, all together, the music melded with the vocals really well. I don’t normally like anything Reggae, but this kind of tropical sound made for a really nice listen.

Score – 7.5

meaning of Love already had piano in it, but the “Acoustic Piano Version” of it nixes all other instruments and sounds and boosts the piano quite a bit. It’s more intricate, and makes the song sound a bit softer and sweeter. I always like the keys used in the chorus and the song as a whole so this was enjoyable, but I like the original a bit more.

Score – 8

Final Note

MOON and blossom were great remixes were awesome, couldn’t ask for more, this was a hell of a way to start this project and I hope it just goes up from here.

Koda Kumi – Gossip Candy

1. Lollipop

2. Inside Fishbowl

3. Outside Fishbowl

4. For you

*Bonus Track*

5. Got to Be Real

This is Kumi’s first single since the release of her 8th album and wouldn’t you know it, it’s a summery type of single. It’s similar to Ayumi’s Sunrise / Sunset ~LOVE is ALL single in that two songs on this single are basically the same, but with a slightly different sound and lyrics.

First we have “Lollipop”. The title makes me think of Lick me❤ But while Lick me❤ isn’t that dirty and has a sugary pop sound, Lollipop is pretty sexy sounding both in the music and especially when Kumi says in English “Lick my lollipop” This song is pretty catchy and I’ve listened to it quite a few times over in a short amount of time.

Score – 0

Now we have the two similar tracks, “Inside Fishbowl” has a definite pop sound with higher vocals from Kumi, while “Outside Fishbowl” is a bit more rockish with a deeper sound. Personally I like the deeper, rocker-ish stuff that Kumi has been doing so I enjoyed Outside Fishbowl a little more… >.> Sorry I just can’t get over those titles XD I just don’t get them :S That being said, I found the songs mediocre at best and wish she has concentrated on just one version of a more summer type song. But I guess it is good to mix it up.

Score – 0

To change it up “For you” slows things down and is a ballad type song. I didn’t think much of the song, but once it got to the chorus I started to like it, it’s one of the stronger parts of this song. Other than that, I didn’t find anything amazing about the instrumental, it reminded me of slow American pop songs of the late 90′s XD

Score – 0

Now, for one of the best parts of this single, Kumi covers classic disco song “Got to Be Real” by Cheryl Lynn. When I first heard a snippet of this song in Kumi’s Pepsi Nex CM, I prayed she would release a full version and I got my wish :) The instrumental is slightly modernized but the classic sound is still there. Kumi’s English here, compared to anything in the tracks beforehand, is a lot better surprisingly. Honestly, this was, in my opinion, the best song on the single.

Score – 0

All of the songs on this single had this kind of “throw-back” feel, if you will, but I kind of liked that aspect. Not to mention there is definitely a lot of variety here.

Score – 0

Final Note

Not bad Kumi, not bad.

the brilliant green – Blue Daisy

1. Blue Daisy

2. All Day And All Of The Night

3. BLUE SUNRISE

This is the brilliant green’s second single after their second comeback :P Unfortunately, the brilliant green’s guitarist, Ryo Matsui had decided to leave the group, however, Tomoko Kawase and Shunsaku Okuda will continue to perform as the brilliant green.

“Blue Daisy” sounds typically melancholic and I couldn’t help but feel that it might have been influenced a little by Ryo leaving. I might not be anywhere near right but that’s just what I feel. I kind of liked Blue Daisy even though it was sort of generic and maybe even a little bit like Like Yesterday.

Score – 0

“All Day And All Of The Night” is a cover of a song originally by The Kinks. Kawase’s English is still a little horrendous and if I didn’t already know the song, I’d have no idea what she was saying. Nothing really amazing about this cover, just a straight up cover with nothing new or interesting going on.

Score – 0

“BLUE SUNRISE” is a really good, simple acoustic song that I’ll say right now is the best track on this single. Like I said, it’s simple and it’s a really short song, but it overshadows the others and actually really improved my overall opinion of this single.

Score – 0
