Ayumi Hamasaki – FIVE

1. progress

2. ANother song feat. URATA NAOYA

3. Why… feat. JUNO

4. beloved

5. BRILLANTE

After two albums in just one year last year, Ayu takes a little bit of a break and slows it all down by quietly releasing this gem.

What feels like a LONG time ago, it was announced that Ayu would do the theme song for the newest Tales of game, Tales of Xillia. Fast forward to now and the song “progress” is out and it’s beautiful and awesome for a video game theme and an Ayu song by itself. It starts out pretty quiet, simple piano and strings with Ayu singing the first verses and chorus. After that however, everything picks up! In comes fast strings, percussion and a grungy electric guitar start up and the song really gets going. The most impressive is the chorus now as Ayu is really putting her all into and she sounds really strong in it, it flows perfectly too, and is wicked catchy. She finishes the song with what seems like an extra syllable tacked onto the last line of the last chorus which I found cool and tacks on some vocalizing (WOAH WOAH WOAHHH) which flows so well and ends the song off perfectly.

Score – 9.5

“ANother song” features Urata Naoya whom Ayu collaborated with last year for Dream ON. Also geddit? ANother? AYU NAOYA. A. N. ANYWAY… moving on. This song is kind of  a medium ballad with some synths and rhythmic clapping going the entire time. I’m still not a huge fan of Naoya’s voice although am getting used to it I suppose. The song seems kinda bland because there isn’t much different in the verses and when the chorus hits, though when the bridge hits you know it. A little bit of key changing in the final choruses spices things up a bit. Not a bad song, but just kinda… nice? Eh.

Score – 8

Another collab is up next with “Why…” which features JUNO. I like his voice a bit better than Naoya’s but hey, whatever… This song is a bit of a bigger ballad that’s a bit more involved. The verses are fairly quiet and everything gets a bit loud in the chorus which is bursting with percussion and strings. I thought their voices blended a bit better as well during the chorus and such. I liked the back and forth vocals and overall structure featured in the bridge. I find Ayu doesn’t do many collabs and maybe I like it better that way, but this one’s not bad at all.

Score – 8.5

Now for a real Ayu ballad “beloved” is beautiful and heartfelt. The verses are calming with prominent piano and background strings. I like how the strings become more involved once the chorus hits and the building of everything overall as the first chorus comes to a close and percussion and chimes come into the mix. I loved the melody during the bridge and the slight vocalizing featured in it was beautiful. Wish the outro was a little more involved, although the vocalizing was nice.

Score – 9

And here is the mini album closer. “BRILLANTE” pronounced ‘brill-on-tay’ is something else altogether. The song features some really interesting ethereal sounds and starts off with male chanting in (I think) Latin. Everything builds slightly and quite suddenly explodes into a bit of Arabic and even Egyptian sounding influences.  Everything quiets down as Ayu actually starts singing which for some reason sounds more beautiful than ever. Everything picks up, including the chanting during the chorus. There is something really raw about Ayu’s voice when she is singing here and I think it works absolutely great. The music and arrangement are I suppose on par with some kind of big, movie soundtrack sounding song, it’s all really impressive. The bridge is positively beautiful and could bring me to tears in a weaker state. The ending is interesting also in that it’s a bit extended and features some more chanting. The background music also stutters a bit and starts repeating exponentially and it all comes to an abrupt end.

Score – 10

*Note*

Upon my first listen I did stumble upon FIVE’s hidden track. Unfortunately this song is only a slightly alternate / different version of “Why…”  and it features Urata Naoya instead of JUNO. It’s a bit more upbeat and I really enjoyed listening to it. Would have killed for a completely new song though. No ratings for this song though. Go buy this mini and give it a listen!

Final Note

I’ve heard a lot of negativity is surrounding FIVE and I quite honestly don’t know Why… progress and BRILLANTE are some of Ayu’s best songs TO DATE, BRILLANTE even being a song I considered to be one of her best ever, in all honesty.

Koda Kumi – 4 TIMES

1. Introduction~sunny time~

2. Poppin’love cocktail feat.TEEDA

3. Interlude~sunset time~

4. IN THE AIR

5. Interlude~midnight time~

6. V.I.P.

7. Interlude~time to … love~

8. KO-SO-KO-SO

As usual for the summer time it seems Kumi releases a massive single, this time, in the form of 4 TIMES which naturally is a quadruple A-side single.

*NOTE*

This single features an introduction and 3 interludes that are more just segue… things. I started to rate them, but then I just decided I wouldn’t as I didn’t want their rating to effect the singles overall rating. Hope no one is disappointed, they are really short anyway…

“Introduction~sunny time~” features a bunch of different sounds. Soft crashing waves, ticking of a clock, engines starting up and cars flying by followed by someone seeking through the radio and catching a bit of the upcoming song, tire screeching ends this intro.

Right off the bat you realize “Poppin’love cocktail” feat.TEEDA is a really fun, incredibly energetic track. The chorus is incredibly infectious and features the most energy overall. Unfortunately there seems to be a kind of disconnect happening with everything else in the song and the choruses, they just don’t seem to flow very well together. Thankfully, the outro of the song ends up flowing fairly well which slightly makes up for it. Also, I couldn’t help but notice that the song was getting a tad repetitive by the midpoint. TEEDA’s parts didn’t impress me THAT much, but the song isn’t destroyed by them.

Score – 8.5

Next interlude (better get used to them because there are two more to go after this) is “Interlude~sunset time~. Are you sensing a theme? Yes we are going along through a day in the life of Koda Kumi, lol, not really, jk, etc. But these are definitely reminding me of the interludes off of 3 SPLASH. This one features ticking again really quick, soft waves again, and some nice fluffy synths on top of it. Quite fleeting really but leads in perfectly / helps segue right into the change of pace that is…

“IN THE AIR” which is a really sweet sounding, really uplifting-sounding track. It features piano and what seemed like synth-backed guitar. Where the song shines of course is the chorus and I really loves the cheery atmosphere created in the melody and flow of it and also the way Kumi sings it of course. Again, for some reason I felt that there was a slight disconnect between choruses and the rest of the song though it’s most certainly not as bad to me as Poppin’love cocktail was.

Score – 9

There’s that ticking again in “Interlude~midnight time~”. Again we get a tiny little preview of the song we are about to hear over what sounds like people enjoying themselves at a part or something. Again it acts to perfectly change pace to the more sexy part of the single.

“V.I.P.” kicks things up a notch as it’s a sexy super synthy club track. I felt like some elements in the song just didn’t flow that well and I wasn’t really a fan of the SUPER synthed up vocals. The bridge features a random string bit seemingly out of nowhere. It’s also a little stingy as it’s the shortest song so far and on the single in general at just 3:05.

Score – 8

Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick… once again, for the last time really. The party seems to be winding down and we hear the slightest bit of music from the next song. Suddenly someone opens a door, undoes their belt, unzips and pulls their pants down or something… interesting… that really kind of just sets it up perfectly for one of Kumi’s sexiest tracks to date, it even spawned a banned PV!

“KO-SO-KO-SO” really lives up to its name which means sneaky, or doing something in a secret way, or I guess simply “secretly”. You just get that feeling listening to the repeated synths and Kumi’s little breathy laughs and gasps. The chorus picks things up and elevates it all at just the right amount (yay for something flowing well on the single!). Again this song is a bit short but I feel it manages to accomplish all it needs to in the time that it is.

Score – 9

Final Note

What a rush. No really, the whole single felt a little fleeting, though all the songs were pretty top-notch. WHERE’S MY OUTRO THOUGH!?

JASMINE – ONLY YOU

1. ONLY YOU

2. Addiction

3. ONLY YOU (Instrumental)

4. Addiction (Instrumental)

This is JASMINE’s follow up from ONE which was just amazing so I’m curious to see if she can keep it going.

“ONLY YOU” seems to be quite a typical sounding track for JASMINE. It’s R&B-ish, and has a hint of melancholy similar to a lot of her other songs. However, that’s not to say that this song isn’t good, it’s pretty great, the chorus is really strong and incredibly catchy. I like the high she starts it off with and the range she displays in the song as a whole as well, but it’s not surprise here that JASMINE has a voice. The ad-libbing at the end was a nice touch.

Score – 8

I was skeptical for some reason with “Addiction” but as soon as I started listening to it I was intrigued. It’s a fast paced song that has a hell of a lot going on. It sounds a bit marching band(?) overall especially with the use of whistles. I love the attitude JASMINE gives in the song and I especially love how strongly and fast she sings the chorus. There are also two occasions where she says “Uhh Don’t *BLEEP* with me!” which I thought was great one near the bridge and it’s how she ends the song which finishes up with almost video game beeping and a gunshot. Overall a track that packs a punch. Better than the A-side.

Score – 9.5

Final Note

Neat single with two very different but good tracks.

Namie Amuro – NAKED / Fight Together / Tempest

Namie Amuro – NAKED / Fight Together / Tempest

1. NAKED

2. Fight Together

3. Tempest

4. NAKED (Extended Instrumental)

5. Fight Together (Instrumental)

6. Tempest (Instrumental)

OK so I’ve been really behind lately, but get ready for a whirlwind of reviews starting with Namie here who comes quite a while after Break It / Get Myself Back for a big Triple A-Side single.

What a name right? “NAKED” starts off with some pretty heavy computerized sounds and synth as Namie starts singing in a somewhat deep tone. The chorus has an interesting flow with the vocals almost sounding cut. The song overall has a pretty strong sound but in the end I didn’t find it that spectacular or memorable, maybe only the chorus a little.

Score – 7.5

“Fight Together” is also kind of a cool title which starts off with birds chirping(?). I feel like this is her “heal Japan” song, you know, an uplifting song for Japan for the hard times right now. I actually really LOVE the beats, melody and synths this song starts with. The beats continue as Namie starts singing and more beats get layered as she goes on until she hits this kind of jazzy break down before the chorus which I didn’t exactly love. The chorus disappoints at first but then sounds really great in the end, ending with the English lyrics “We Fight Together”. The atmosphere of the song on the whole is great and I love how it ends with the same sounds it starts with while Namie repeats “Life goes on…”. It’s got a couple of flaws and the song would be perfect without them but it’s my favorite off the single.

Score – 9

“Tempest” closes off the single with a ballad. It starts off pretty quiet and suddenly everything kicks off with the chorus and Namie goes from almost whispering vocals to belting some pretty strong notes which I thought was cool. At first it sounded to me like the lyrics in the chorus sounded a little awkward, like they tried to fit too much into it. But now I realize they actually have a nice flow to them. The song has some little bouts of whimsical sounds throughout which I thought was nice for an epic level sounding ballad.

Score – 8

Final Note

A decent single overall, I’m interested to see what she does next.
