girl next door – signal

1. signal

2. Precious Friend

3. signal (Instrumental)

4. Precious Friend (Instrumental)

Aw cute, that track listing is like a neat little pyramid. Too bad that’s the only thing I’m probably going to like about this single… Ha, if I thought I had lost faith in Ken Hirai what do I think about gnd?

OK, I take it back, “signal” isn’t that bad, especially since it has this kind of retro, 90’s J-Pop sound to it, or at least I think it does… But anyway, I liked the fast pace of the verses and the chorus had a nice melody to it, although some of the progression felt very generic gnd. At the same time, I have to say it was a little more fresh than some of the stuff that, say, was on Destination. So kudos for that, a little more creativity in the overall production and we may have something!

Score – 7.5

I have to say that the same general comments apply to Precious Friend although it’s a bit more… reductive, shall we say. One of it’s saving graces was Chisa’s vocals, which, I will say I always tend to like especially here. Another was this really interesting and damn near exciting piano and synth progression that I absolutely died for when I heard, and I shit you not there was something a little “Mamma Mia” about it. If you heard it you might know what I was talking about. But anyway, I think I simultanesouly was thankful for it, but at the same time it just made me crave more and then become sad because there wasn’t any more.

Score – 7

Final Note

While I’m slightly impressed, I’m of course not blown away, and I’ve seen new era potential be shot in the face by gnd before sooo….

girl next door – Boogie-Woogie Night

1. Boogie-Woogie Night

2. Happy Birthday!

3. Hoshizora Keikaku (FROM LIVE Destination)

4. Boogie-Woogie Night (Instrumental)

5. Happy Birthday! (Instrumental)

I’m just going to be honest for a second, I found ROCK YOUR BODY to be kind of silly of a title, and didn’t think the song would be that good because of it. So I’m sure you can imagine my dismay when I realized the title of this single was Boogie-Woogie Night. OK, now that I’ve said that, onward!

Contrary to my judging a single by its title “Boogie-Woogie Night” isn’t THAT bad of a song, it’s not amazing of course, the lyrics “Boogie-oogie-Woogie-oogie Party Night!” still makes me cringe. The song has a lot going on so many natural instruments, though I didn’t care much for the trumpet. It’s got good energy and even though it clocks in at just under 4 minutes it seems to really fly by.

Score – 7.5

I just can’t help it, I was even more fearful when I realized the next song was called “Happy Birthday!” I was glad that the song was on the mellower side though it was kind of teetering on the border of boring and a bit forgetful. I also couldn’t help the feeling that it was too themed and rather corny. The more prominent percussion was a nice touch and +1 for guitar solo instrumental break. Also, Chisa needs to work on that “th” sounds 😛

Score – 7

Final Note

You know, I thought this was going to be worse than ROCK YOUR BODY but it ended up being a little bit better.

girl next door – ROCK YOUR BODY

1. ROCK YOUR BODY (Extended Ver.)

2. Nanatsu no Moji

3. ROCK YOUR BODY

4. Ready to be lady (LIVE FROM Destination)

5. ROCK YOUR BODY (Instrumental)

Whew this is late, of course, like I said, really didn’t like it, seemed to have halted my whole reviewing process actually. Oh well here I go.

Good christ this track is 8:54. I know it’s the “Extended Version” of ROCK YOUR BODY but damn. Also, no idea why this would come before the regular(?) version but whatever. Anyway intro is long as hell and just consists of some pretty generic thumping club sounding beats then this woman starts shouting “It’s time to…” well I don’t know because I can’t make it out along with some crowd cheering effects. The pace suddenly changes to a more mellow beat that I actually liked but then it just goes back to the generic thumping stuff. At 3 and a half minutes in I was left wondering when the actual song was going to start because I had had enough of this intro. Finally, 4 minute in, Chisa starts singing and you know, it actually doesn’t sound that bad. I liked the vocals in the verses but then the melody of the chorus comes in and Chisa starts singing “Everybody, hey! ROCK YOUR BODY!” over and over and I’m just not feeling it. Naturally, it’s a hyper song so overall I’m not really digging it anyway. As soon as I thought things could improve, the bridge just pulls a typical gnd by sounding like a ton of their older stuff… By the time this song was coming to a close I was just thankful to be honest.

Score – 5.5

“Nanatsu no Moji” gives me a breathe of fresh air, mostly because it calms things down a bit even though it’s pretty active. I actually kind of liked this one, the beats and sound were well old but that’s nothing new for gnd. That needed improvement of course, but the overall melody and the flow of the song, especially the chorus worked really well, and saves the song for me. Quite frankly even with the overplayed synths, etc. This song manages to be one of their better ones in quite a while.

Score – 8

NO, NOT THIS AGAIN ;; No really, I literally cringed when the 5:00 version of “ROCK YOUR BODY” started played. Nothing new here so I’m not even going to bother but it does have one redeeming factor. It’s shorter.

Score – 6

Final Note

Whew, what a doozy.

GIRL NEXT DOOR – Dada Para!!

1. Dada Para!!

2. Pure

3. Summer Breeze

4. Dada Para!! (Instrumental)

5. Pure (Instrumental)

I wasn’t really sure to think of “Dada Para!!” as soon as it started, in fact I was a little worried over it’s synths and sound, but immediately I really liked the atmosphere it was building and the energy it was radiating. The beat is just really infectious and Chisa’s vocals just kinda make you feel good. It’s definitely one of GND’s more hyper sounding tracks and I typically don’t like them but this one is perfectly fine.

Score – 8.5

At first “Pure” sounds exactly like what you would expect a GND, ballad, B-side to sound like. As soon as it started I got an overwhelming feeling of deja vu as I can’t say how many times I’ve listened to a thumping energetic GND song only to have the B-side slow things down. It’s like it’s a tradition. It kind of makes up for things by incorporating some extra beats and sounds after the first chorus you wouldn’t expect, but nothing in general really saves this one.

Score – 6

At first I thought I was going mental when I started up “Summer Breeze” because it sounded JUST like another GND song, like, more than the others ever would, could, should, etc. Then I realized while yes, I am a little mental, this song is in fact just a retake of the song “Winter Breeze” off of GND’s third album Destination, whew. I’m not sure how much is different, it sounds a little different, atmosphere seems a bit more, dare I say it? Summer oriented, whereas the other sounds a bit “wintery”. I’m not sure if the lyrics are the same because quite frankly, I don’t care much about this song to pay that close attention. Sorry. While I have reviewed songs like this before, Ayu’s “Sunrise/Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~” comes to mind, I found those overall better in the first place, and not having that much of a good opinion of Winter Breeze in the first place doesn’t really help Summer Breeze out.

Score – 6

Final Note

As always GND, inconsistent, the A-side is passable, everything else is not.

-Note-

In commemoration of their… third(?) anniversary as a group, GIRL NEXT DOOR have officially changed their name to, wait for it, girl next door. That’s right, from all caps to all lower case. This single cover even has two versions! The one I posted is of course the old version, the newer one is the same image but a different, all lower case filled text. This is going to seriously mess with my OCD. Once I’m out of therapy, I’ll edit things according to how I want them to be.

GIRL NEXT DOOR – Silent Scream

1. Silent Scream

2. fallin’ angel

3. Orion (Gold Remix)

4. Silent Scream (Instrumental)

5. Destination Digest

Well, here it is, my first single review in months (do I even remember how to do this?) and it feels good to be back. I have a lot of catch-up to do so lets just get all the old stuff out of the way quickly shall we?

“Silent Scream” seems like a really typical move for GND (no surprise there, really) although Chisa’s vocals are a tad lower than usual which I always seem to appreciate. One of the synths used in the song is kind of high pitched and I really didn’t enjoy hearing it. The chorus has a certain something about it that I liked and actually made the song for me.

Score – 7.5

Right from the start the synths in “fallin’ angel” actually sound kind of unique and again Chisa is singing a bit lower than usual and I like it. The song itself, the arrangement and flow are also “new” sounding for GND. There’s nothing really groundbreaking here but at the same time I am impressed especially for a B-side.

Score – 8

The “Gold Remix” of Orion started off somewhat good, and I really liked the background music. I don’t think it really fit with Orion but regardless, afterwards it went downhill and I started to not like it that much as per the usual with me and remixes.

Score – 6.5

The “Destination Digest” is basically a bunch of previews for the songs that are going to be (read: currently is, lol) on GND’s new album Destination so I won’t really “review” it…

Final Note

Altogether not bad and I say that mostly because I really didn’t think Silent Scream was going to be that good.

GIRL NEXT DOOR – Unmei no Shizuku ~Destiny’s Star~ / Hoshizora Keikaku

1. Unmei no Shizuku ~Destiny’s Star~

2. Hoshizora Keikaku

3. Hoshizora Keikaku ~Merry X’mas thanks daddy ver.~

4. Be your wings (Hi-NGR Attack Remix)

5. FRIENDSHIP (BE MY FRIENDS Remix)

I was really glad when this single was coming up even though I really just wanted a new album. Hopefully this just means that a new album is certainly on the way.

“Unmei no Shizuku ~Destiny’s Star~” is a tie in for the new Ultraman Zero movie in Japan (in case you wanted to know). I was actually really impressed in the beginning as Chisa seems to sing in a slightly lower register than we normally hear from her. That ends quickly though and I really liked the jump from slow and calm intro to fast and furious pace of the song. Some of the synths and beats here sounded fresh and everyone knows that is certainly something GND needs. The variety featured in the bridge is also a nice touch.

Score – 9

I think “Hoshizora Keikaku” sounds a bit more Christmas like, which you would expect given the season, but only in the respect that it features some bells and chimes. There’s a lot going on at all times of the song but I don’t really find anything that interesting about it, cute but boring I guess you could say.

Score – 7.5

Well, if I thought that the original sounded Christmas like, the “Merry X’mas thanks daddy ver.” is definitely Christmas like. You can tell right aways as the music is slightly different, it seems more toned down and they use acoustic as opposed to electric guitar. Not to mention that Chisa starts the song off be replacing a line from the original song with “Merry Merry Christmas, Happy Christmas” I actually liked this version a lot more than I did the original.

Score – 8.5

The “Hi-NGR Attack Remix” (whatever that means) of Be your wings kind of sounds like what happened to Infinity on the last single. The song is made to be way to hyper and I really just can’t listen to it, it’s even annoying at times. I don’t think it really helps that I’m not necessarily a fan of the original Be your wings to begin with.

Score – 7

The “BE MY FRIENDS Remix” seems kind of similar in the seemingly hyper respect, but it isn’t as bad. Still a little annoying sometimes but at least I can listen to the whole song, I guess it helps that I actually really like the original FRIENDSHIP.

Score – 8

Final Note

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, not a bad single GND, but you’ll need to step it up a bit for the next album.

GIRL NEXT DOOR – Ready to be a lady

1. Ready to be a lady

2. Kaze no Capsule

3. Shiawase no Hakari

4. Infinity (EURODIMA Remix)

5. Ready to be a lady (Instrumental)

I thought “Ready to be a lady” was a really weird title but I actually think very highly of the song. At first I thought it was similar to Infinity but I tried not to make any comparisons. I really liked the energy and feel of the song and thought the chorus was really fun and catchy.

Score – 8.5

Kaze no Capsule sounded like a typical track from GND but it was kind of interesting and kept my attention. I liked the pacing and I especially liked how fast the chorus was and I thought it was kind of catchy. However, like I said, fairly usual stuff from GIRL NEXT DOOR.

Score – 7.5

Unfortunately Shiawase no Hakari has pretty much the same diagnosis. Sounds kinda of similar to past GND tracks but still manages to keep my attention in some way. It’s a bit of a ballad and is kind of long winded, like a few other ballad b-sides from GND. For this song, the lead in to the chorus was really pretty and I think I even preferred it over the chorus itself.

Score – 7.5

The “EURODIMA Remix” of Infinity didn’t really do anything for me as you might have guessed. To be honest, the remix doesn’t do much to the song either. It just kind of makes it sound hyper and at 6:41 it’s way too long. The only redeeming quality is the fact that Infinity is a really great song.

Score – 6.5

Final Note

Don’t really know where GND is headed but something needs to change methinks.

GIRL NEXT DOOR – Freedom

1. Freedom

2. Sayonara

3. Seeds of dream (BLOOMING REMIX)

4. Freedom (Instrumental)

Following their sophomore album NEXT FUTURE, I was eagerly awaiting GIRL NEXT DOOR’s next release and as soon as Freedom was announced I really could not wait for it 😀

Right off the bat I could tell that “Freedom” had a much harder synth sound going for it and I really liked it, alongside Chisa’s vocalizations. I really liked the opening verse in which Chisa’s voice is tinged by synth just a little, I just wished that they would have kept that going for more parts of the song. With Freedom they are really trying to spruce things up and it’s a valiant effort but they still have some way to go. This is a step in the right direction though.

Score – 9.5

I’m really disappointed with “Sayonara”. People can claim other GND songs sound the same but this one really takes the cake. I was naming off the songs that it sounded just like as I went ESCAPE being one of the prominent ones. Just when I thought GND was changing it up too 😦 I know this is a B-side but still, annoyed and disappointed nonetheless.

Score – 6.5

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time you’ll know that I normally hate remixes, and BLOOMING REMIX of Seeds of dream doesn’t change anything. So I really have nothing to say about it.

Score – 6

Final Note

I’m really not sure what to think about this upcoming GND era :S
