MiChi – TOKYO NIGHT

1. TOKYO NIGHT

2. December

3. Revolution

4. TOKYO NIGHT (Instrumental)

MiChi’s lastest single before her new album THERAPY comes out! Let’s see now…

“Tokyo Night” starts off with quite an electronic sound which I think was probably foreseeable. As soon as MiChi starts singing though, things sound a little flat, and dare I say it, boring. The building right before the chorus showed promise but then once the chorus actually hits, it just definitely felt a bit lackluster. Again it was one of those songs that I kept waiting for something to really happen, but it never really goes anywhere.

Score – 7.5

As soon as “December” starts, I was feeling it. It’s quite quiet at first but then bursts into some percussion and electric guitar. It suffers a little bit from being slower paced and I do wish it was faster. The chorus helps alleviate some of the draggy feeling and is the highlight of the song. MiChi sounds a little shaky in this one which isn’t something I hear from her often, but it didn’t detract too much and I still enjoyed the song. Interesting to note that the song is all in English.

Score – 8

“Revolution” is a cover, naturally for a MiChi single, of The Veronicas song by the same name. The music sounds a little on the light side and I wish it had been a little harder like the original. The sound seems to get a little better towards the end. MiChi occasionally sounds shaky again while singing this one, I noticed it more here than in December. An OK cover, she’s definitely done better though.

Score – 7

Final Note

Well all I can say about this single, with the exception of December, is that I’m glad her new album is coming out soon because this just wasn’t really up to par, like many of her latest singles unfortunately.

MiChi – Find Your Way

1. Find Your Way

2. Perfect World

3. Just The Way You Are

4. Find Your Way (Instrumental)

“Find Your Way” initially seemed like it would be a great song, the intro beat and MiChi’s vocalizing were pretty good. But instantly I could get the feeling that this was ONE Take 2. The background music just ends up feeling a little cheap which is a shame since the lead up to the chorus featuring strings seemed so promising. Michi’s vocals are top notch though and it seems to be the only real thing that saves the song for me. Not to mention she also really shows some strength in her voice, which was different and not something I was accustomed to hearing, it was welcome. I just wish the music had backed that up more.

Score – 8

MiChi’s B-sides tend to be really awesome, and naturally, “Perfect World” is no exception. The first time I heard the song it didn’t click with me, but nearly instantly on the second listen everything fit into place. It starts off with a kind of skipping, cut, subdued music that suddenly shifts into this mellow, calming beat right after MiChi says “There’s no such thing… as a Perfect World”. MiChi sings in a much higher register in this song that I’m not really used to, mostly because I  don’t think I’ve heard it before, or if so not much. Wasn’t sure how much I dug it but it didn’t seem that bad. It really kind of felt like the vocals took a back seat in this song which I normally don’t like or agree should ever happen but it was sort of OK for me here.

Score – 8.5

And now for a typical cover! This time MiChi covers Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are”. I can stand the original, although that makes it sound as if I don’t like it that much which isn’t the case, it’s an alright song. The opening vocalizing is really pretty and I think she does the song justice. Nothing much going on here, like I said it’s a pretty typical cover, though I guess this version naturally sounds a bit more ethereal.

Score – 8

Final Note

Was looking for a kick ass A-side on this one, didn’t really find it but oh well, wasn’t too bad.

MiChi – ONE

1. ONE

2. LiFE CLOCK

3. DON’T DREAM IT’S OVER

4. YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!

The title song of this single ONE was quickly (kinda) released ahead of time in light of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It wasn’t completely done but judging by that I think you can guess the kind of tone this song has.

“ONE” is meant to be a fast paced, uplifting, inspirational track. The beat is great along with the synths and I did like the fast lyrics, though they are drawn out in the chorus making the chorus kind of a let down as it is more understated than the rest of the song is. I was a little disappointed by it. I really liked the calmed down bridge section, followed by MiChi vocalizing and whispering. The little bit of piano and strings right at the end was a nice touch.

Score – 8.5

“LiFE CLOCK” starts off with a clock ticking away and a baby crying, how fitting. Immediately I really liked the atmosphere created by the continuation of the ticking, some percussion and acoustic guitar. It too feels like an uplifting song but it’s a bit more B-side sounding, but it’s not bad by any stretch. As I said I like the atmosphere but it didn’t leave too big an impression on me.

Score – 7.5

“DON’T DREAM IT’S OVER” is of course a cover of the song originally by Crowded House. It’s very acoustic and gives the song a sound I haven’t really heard before. I’d say it’s a pretty good cover and MiChi did the song justice, although I’ll always say that my favorite version of this song is by Sixpence None the Richer.

Score – 7

Of course I don’t care for the remix of “Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!” because, well, it’s a remix. It also seems really lazy for a remix too. In all honesty I really like YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! a lot more now than when I first reviewed it and listening to this remix just makes me want to stop it and start playing the original.

Score – 6

Final Note

Decent single overall and great for the times.

MiChi – LOVE is.

1. LOVE is.

2. YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!

3. JUMP ON IT

4. PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY)

Gah, another late ass review. Better JUMP ON IT. AHA. No? OK…

“LOVE is.” starts with fast and furious beats and electric guitar that I really just loved,  as soon as I heard it, I was like “Oh yeah, MiChi is back.” The synths seemed kind of retro 80’s ish but I dunno really, I wasn’t there. The chorus is really great and one of the best parts of the song in my opinion.

Score – 9.5

“YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!” is reminiscent of other slower, yet fast paced MiChi songs. The song starts out with some soft electric guitar, clapping and a few synths and ends up speeding up from there. Nothing too amazing but I found it enjoyable enough.

Score – 8.5

“JUMP ON IT” brings back that classic angsty sounding MiChi who’s full of attitude. The song is completely in English except for an extremely short interlude part where the music suddenly stops she says something in Japanese as you hear a liquid being poured. The song itself is kind of reminiscent of Shibuya de Punch in some respects but the song is unique in its on right. I really enjoyed the last part with just the repeated lines ending in “just JUMP ON IT” accompanied by the grungier darker sounding synths and I wish the whole song had kind of been more like that.

Score – 9

MiChi pulls a total MiChi (at least in my eyes) and covers a song originally by The Offspring. “PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY)” MiChi definitely puts her own spin on the song right down to a chipmunk toned “And all the girls say I’m pretty fly for a white guy”. Not my kind of song, but once again, kind of enjoyable thanks to MiChi.

Score – 8

Final Note

Pretty strong single, stronger than the last two actually. Keep it up MiChi!

MiChi x the telephones – WoNdeR WomaN

1. WoNdeR WomaN

2. Strong MAN

3. WoNdeR WomaN (T.O.M remix)

4. WoNdeR WomaN (Instrumental)

5. Strong MAN (Instrumental)

MiChi follows up quickly with another single but unfortunately, my feelings are mixed. Well they aren’t that mixed, I do like the song but I could do without some things.

WoNdeR WomaN definitely has a more aggressive rock sound than any of her past songs so I thought this was a nice change of pace. She partners up with a Japanese band called the telephones but quite frankly I’ve never heard of them. As usual, MiChi’s vocals are great but the telephones’ lead singer voice I do not like, it’s actually kind of annoying to me. I’m glad to see MiChi collaborating with someone but this song would have been much better to me if their singer had remained silent XD

Score – 6.5

“Strong MAN” has a good grungy sounding guitar going on in it. There are certain elements that I liked about it, the chorus being one of those. Unfortunately I thought that this was one of MiChi’s less remarkable B-sides, she normally has REALLY good B-sides but this just didn’t cut it for me.

Score – 8

Yay a remix >.> The “T.O.M remix” of WoNdeR WomaN is typically annoying and not really worth listening to in my opinion, remixes are all typically annoying but there are a few that are over the top annoying, this one is one of those. But everyone knows I’m biased because I hate remixes anyway.

Score – 5

I normally don’t comment on the instrumentals, but listening to the Strong MAN instrumental was actually enjoyable. I do like listening to the instrumentals of some songs occasionally, and this is one I’ll be listening to.

Final Note

My girl MiChi better step her game up 😛

MiChi – All about the Girls ~Iijanka Party People~ / Together again

1. All about the Girls ~Iijanka Party People~

2. Together again

3. dance DANCE!

4. All about the Girls ~Iijanka Party People~ (Instrumental Version)

5. Together again (Instrumental Version)

6. dance DANCE! (Instrumental Version)

MiChi is back and coming off strong from her first full Japanese album with this double A-side single. I was really excited for this single but somehow I forgot about it >_< Oh well, better late then never, right?

“All about the Girls ~Iijanka Party People~” is a fast paced and really fun song that contains a sample from “Scatman”. At first I wasn’t sure what to think but after a few listens I was OK with those parts of the song. I really liked the infectious chorus and the repetition in it. The bridge was a cool part of the song and I liked the small bit of lyrics there.

Score – 8

I was pleasantly surprised by “Together again” as it’s a slower song with a faster paced chorus. While the rest of the song is just kind of nice, the chorus is the highlight of the song. I really liked the beat and MiChi’s vocals are on point. I really liked that there are sections of the song accented by reversed piano, I’m a real sucker for it.

Score – 9

“dance DANCE!” is pretty good as well. For some reason it seemed like a slower, Scatman-less, All about the Girls to me. So it was alright, nothing really of note, but enjoyable to listen to nonetheless.

Score – 9

Final Note

I’m pleased, but I’m left wanting more >_<

MiChi - UP TO YOU

~Album~

MiChi – UP TO YOU

1. MadNesS Vol. 1

2. PROMiSE

3. ChaNge the WoRLd

4. Why oh Why

5. HEy GirL

6. KiSS KiSS xxx

7. RaiN

8. Oh Oh…

9. Something Missing

10. One of a Kind

11. WoNDeRLaND?

12. Shibuya de Punch

13. YOU

14. UP TO YOU

So this is my first album review and I’m glad that it’s a particularly new artist for me. That being said, let’s get on with the review!

The album opens up with “MadNesS Vol. 1” and as an intro to her true debut album I think it works quite well. The title is definitely accurate as the song is all over the place but I think it serves it’s purpose on cluing you in on what’s to come.

Score – 8.5

The first MiChi song I really fell in love with, “PROMiSE“, follows and I am glad it remains unchanged.

Score – 9.5

I really thought that “ChaNge the WoRLd” was just OK at first but after giving it multiple listens I really fell in love with it. It ranks right up there with PROMiSE.

Score – 9

Get ready for this one. Why oh why did they change “YOY” to “Why oh Why”? I didn’t like YOY at first but lately I really got into it. The album version along with a new name comes a completely different sound. It’s slightly annoying and in my opinion is a huge downgrade from YOY. One thing that was interesting was that it sampled some vocalizing from some of MiChi’s songs. However that in no way saves this doozy.

Score – 7.5

HEy GirL” was originally the B-side of PROMiSE and I’m glad it makes an appearance on the album, in fact all of the B-sides from her singles are on the album.

Score – 9.5

KiSS KiSS xxx” was the first MiChi song that I heard and I am really glad that I did.

Score – 9

“RaiN” the first true new song on the album starts off with some light percussion and leads into a nice acoustic guitar. I liked the slightly lower key that MiChi sings in in the beginning. The chorus picks up the tempo just the slightest bit and I thought the structure really worked. The song is pretty short and after listening to it it almost feels bittersweet.

Score – 9

“Oh Oh…” started off good enough but I felt like the song didn’t really go anywhere. The song is completely in English, that being said I feel like the lyrics and attitude of the song didn’t really go with the music at all.

Score – 7.5

Yes! I finally get to hear the Bayonetta CM theme. “Something Missing” starts off pretty fast paced but just OK. Then the chorus comes in and it just makes the song in my opinion. I really liked the fast pace of the percussion in the background and the fact that other instruments are kept to a minimum. I loved MiChi’s vocalizing in the bridge section and that pause right before the final chorus.

Score – 9

One of a Kind” was the B-side of ChaNge the WoRLd and I didn’t really like it. At this point, I’m on the fence. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either.

Score – 7

WoNDeRLaND?” was the B-side of KiSS KiSS xxx and it instantly became one of my favorites.

Score – 9.5

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from “Shibuya de Punch” being the longest song on the album at 5:16. The song started with a real club feel and sound that I wasn’t really feeling. To a certain point parts of the song feel pretty retro. I think the only thing I liked in this song was the chorus, it really wasn’t bad when you compare it to the rest of the song. The ending is almost all instrumental and pretty random and seemed completely out of place, especially when you factor in all the other sounds that you hear during this section.

Score – 7

YOU” was the first slow song from MiChi and I really liked the change in pace.

Score – 9.5

The album closes with “UP TO YOU” its title track. It starts off with a blaring “1! 2! 3! 4!” and a real hard rock sound. At first I was confused, the song is almost “Fuck You And Your Money” but I quickly realized that it wasn’t. The melody is obviously derived from it but all the lyrics are different and it sounds completely different as well. I thought it was average but it manages to close the album off with a bang and a high note. I liked the key change in the end and the highly computerized vocals of the final chorus.

Score – 9

Final Note

UP TO YOU didn’t really live up to the hype (what ever does anyway?) but it did manage to impress me. Some of the songs were complete ear sores while others stood out. All I know is that it left me wanting more MiChi, if only to make up for a few songs that weren’t so good. All of MiChi’s B-sides were on the album and while I still like a couple of them I would like to hear more new music when it comes to her next album.

MiChi - YOU~Single~

MiChi – YOU

1. YOU

2. YOY

3. YOU (version 3.1)

4. YOU (Instrumental)

Awesome! A sweet slow song from MiChi, that’s exactly how I would describe “YOU”. Don’t get me wrong I love all the upbeat tracks she has done so far but it is finally nice to hear something like this. “YOU” features a nice piano and some calm beats that really sets a nice tone for the song I especially like the strongs that come in during the chorus. MiChi shows great emotion in her singing and it left me wanting a true ballad type song from her.

Score – 9.5

Wow what a difference. “YOY” (what in the world is with that title?) is quite the contrast to “YOU” Right off the bat the opening synth and beats are pretty out there. They made me think of outer space. It’s quite the unique song and I thought the chorus was interesting. However, as interesting as it was, I didn’t hear anything in the song that made me want to give it multiple listens.

Score – 8

The 3.1 version of YOU is quite different from the original. The beginning makes me think of traditional Chinese music but that doesn’t last for too long. This version is lacking most of the vocals, too the point where I first thought it was a instrumental remix. Where there are vocals the pace has been quickened quite a bit.

Score – 9

Final Note

Finally, a ballad from MiChi and it’s awesome.

Edit

After typing this up I realized why the song is called “YOY”. I don’t know why I didn’t get it in the first place, but in the song she sings “YOY” as in “Why oh Why?”

MiChi - KiSS KiSS xxx~Single~

MiChi – KiSS KiSS xxx

1. KiSS KiSS xxx

2. WoNDeRLaND

3. Smells Like Teen Spirit

4. ChaNge the WoRLd (Remix)

My first MiChi song and good thing because it hooked me right away “KiSS KiSS xxx”, contrary to the title, isn’t a dirty song. Right of the bat I realized that MiChi uses a lot of English lyrics, well, more than I’m used to hearing in Japanese music which is fine. I liked the song as it is has a strong pop/rock sound. For some reason I really like the “la la la la’s” in the end.

Score – 9

WoNDeRLaND is this really great and funky tune. MiChi starts off singing “Hello” in English, French, and Korean which I thought was amusing. I  liked the mix of synth and guitar and I like how the synth intensifies in the chorus.

Score – 9.5

MiChi covers the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” which was originally written by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. I have really never liked the song so MiChi singing it really didn’t do anything for me.

Score – 7

The remix of ChaNge the WoRLd featured on this single gave the song a kind of modern R&B sound at first but then it gets all really electronic. But as usual everything sort of makes the song a little unlistenable.

Score – 7.5

Final Note

I liked the change of pace here, and I REALLY like WoNDeRLaND.
